A-A+

Stones often give off the impression of being hard and rational while flowers are tender and emotional. But, these two objects which seem like complete objects were combined in Wu Yang's paintings in an almost "eccentric" way.

Upon first sight of Wu Yang's oil paintings, one may be astonished by the dreamlike worlds she creates. In her art she creates endless fields, deep mountain valleys, and unbounded seas as the backdrop to the leading roles: huge rocks wrapped in colorful fabric. She creates a sense of time and space unique to each frame - a suspended stone in the forest, a stone in a stream, a stone wedged in between the metal of urban cities.

The most typical visual image in Wu Yang's paintings is the diversified decorative patterns on cotton prints in which these stones are wrapped. These refined patterns are undoubtedly the most unique factor of Wu Yang's paintings and a key part of her life. Wu Yang once studied in the Beijing School for Arts and Crafts when she was younger, and when she was 19 years old, she designed textiles for the No. 2 Printing and Dyeing Mill of Beijing. This experience kickstarted Wu Yang's fascination with cotton prints. Alongside a passion for textiles, Wu Yang was also interested in fashion, so she went to the U.K. to study fashion design in 1991 and established her own fashion company after she returned to China in 1995. Her years of experience have made Wu Yang an expert on pattern design, and these patterns have constituted an important segment of her life. Therefore, it is unsurprising that they would continue to be seen in her artistic creations.

Her career as a fashion design cultivated Wu Yang's sensitivity to the textures, the characteristics, and the functions of various textiles. It also led to her decision to wrap stones with these fabrics in her art. Wrapping or covering something isn't a new trend. Some of the most representative works with this theme can be seen in works like the land art of Christos. He covered up enormous landscapes and changed people's original visual impressions of these environments. However, Wu Yang brought her own twist on things. In Wu Yang's paintings, wrapping and covering stones changed their original physical and symbolic attributes and brought a brand-new visual experience for the audience. She skillfully subverts the original impression of the stone and the flower when combining them together and makes it her own, reflecting her unique experiences. While these elements may seem to be conflicting in nature - the coldness of a rock and the sweetness of a flower - Wu Yang finds a special balance with each painting and each vivid world she creates.
